About the role
Duties
Individually, or as part of a team, supports wildlife community studies. Conducts field surveys of birds, mammals, or herpetofauna requiring specialized experience identifying focal species. Performs assignments which involve sampling habitat features associated with wildlife species using various measuring techniques and equipment. Collects data following prescribed protocols. Identifies multiple species by sight or sound, often with the aid of specialized equipment. May assist in capturing and marking focal species. Navigates on public and private road systems without direct supervision. Communicates with crew leader or supervisor on a routine basis, as directed, to update the status of work projects. Locates off-road study sites using compass, topographic maps and/or GPS unit. Records field data in a safe and legible manner. Enters field data onto a computer database. May assist in proofing and editing data forms and databases. Maintains field equipment and vehicles in good working condition. As required, camps at remote locations on National Forest lands.
Qualifications
You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.
GS-05; (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level.
Specialized experience is defined as: Research activity or control program work. Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment. Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
