About This Role
This backend developer role involves building and operating a highly available real-time data platform that delivers sports data to over 150 million users worldwide. The position suits a developer ready to handle sudden spikes in traffic, such as those occurring before a Champions League final.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop highly available backend services in Kotlin that serve data via GraphQL for client web and native mobile applications
- Utilize AI tools like Claude as an accelerator and pair programming partner to write code, design tests, or consult on approaches, while retaining full responsibility for architecture, logic, and code quality
- Manage deployment and scaling in Kubernetes, including deploying services, scaling them correctly in clusters, and maintaining stability
- Tune monitoring and resolve operational peaks by reviewing metrics after weekend matches or major tournaments, adjusting configurations, and preparing the system for future traffic surges
- Participate in architectural decisions, connecting data from databases, BigQuery, Kafka, or RabbitMQ
Requirements
- Strong backend fundamentals (Java, Kotlin): experience with distributed systems, OOP, multithreading/coroutines, and SQL
- Practical approach to AI tools: actively works with AI to speed up work, but also takes responsibility for verifying generated code
- True ownership and a desire to see things through: from assignment to deployment, taking initiative to resolve missing information or code errors
- Growth mindset and healthy humility: open to direct feedback, eager to learn outside of work, and supportive of colleagues during crises
Nice to have:
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and scaling: knowledge of pods, ingress, or HPA, and ability to operate directly in K8s
