Duties

Major Duties: This position is located in the Maintenance Division at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Incumbent makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective parts or components. Replaces solenoids, relays, control modules, water pumps, fuel injectors, spark plugs, brake shoes, wheel bearings, ball joints, steering linkages, mufflers, radiator caps, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, tires, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines. Adjusts brakes, transmission linkages, gear lash and bearing end play, engine idle, voltage and current control valves, sensing valves, expansion valves, and pressure regulator valves. Cleans or replaces filters, screens, battery cables and clamps, engine components, and heating and cooling devices. Services and checks air conditioning systems including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators and replacing anti-freeze solutions, and aligning front ends of cars and trucks by adjusting caster, camber, and setting toe-in. May assist with, or prepare, monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms. Prepares reports using the computer using such programs as Word, Excel, and the FMSS programs. Performs vehicle and equipment operation checks in order to determine safety deficiencies or service requirements of all park vehicles and equipment. Removes and installs vehicle add-on accessory items, such as lights, radios, gun racks, toolboxes, and truck bed racks. May be responsible for inspecting, repairing, and overhauling small engines and other components on items such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, pumps, cement mixers, motorcycles, ATVs and other related park equipment. Responsible for neatness and organization of work area and assigned tools; parts control and inventory, immediate clean-up of any oil spills or other hazards that may present a hazard to shop personnel. Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses, certificates, and any applicable endorsements as required by the Park.

Physical Efforts: The incumbent is required to make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions, and work performed involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles and equipment, and making repairs in tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Incumbent exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks bruises, cuts, and strains. Incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses and respirators.

Area Information: Located in Northeastern, Ohio Cuyahoga Valley National Park is situated along 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River Valley in a suburban setting between the cities of Akron and Cleveland. The park is predominately natural forest and meadow with some areas of agriculture and excellent outdoor recreation opportunities. Winters are moderately cold with average temperatures in the 20 to 30 degree ranges. Heavy snowfall is not unusual. Summers are moderately warm, average temperatures in the high 70's and 80's with occasional warm spells in the 90's. Rural, suburban, and urban communities are all within a reasonable commuting distance. Excellent K-12 schools, numerous colleges, universities, hospitals, and cultural attractions are available in the area.
