About This Role

This Attorney III role involves conducting various court proceedings, including arraignments and informal hearings, within the District Court. The Magistrate manages the small claims docket, accepts pleas, issues warrants, and performs civil marriage ceremonies, handling cases such as civil traffic and municipal civil infractions.

Responsibilities

• Conduct arraignments for misdemeanors and felony cases
• Determine bond and other conditions for pre-trial release
• Manage Civil Small Claims Docket
• Authorize search and arrest warrants for misdemeanors and felony crimes
• Conduct informal hearings for civil traffic infractions and municipal civil infractions
• Review documents, issue judgments, or order other actions
• Conduct civil marriage ceremonies
• Establish and foster positive and productive relationships with legal staff, court officials, law enforcement, and other members of the judicial system
• Conduct legal research when required
• Work nights, weekends, and other non-traditional hours as required to fulfill Magistrate responsibilities and meet the operational needs of the Court
• Perform related work as required

Requirements

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
• 5 to 7 years of related work experience practicing law in a court setting
• A resident of Kalamazoo County
• Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan
• In good standing with the State Bar of Michigan

Important Details

• Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with nights, weekends, and other non-traditional hours as required
