Athletic Trainer

About This Role

The Athletic Trainer primarily works off-site at school athletic facilities and events, providing injury prevention strategies, assessment, and management for student-athletes. The role involves coordinating a student athletic trainer program and communicating with medical and school personnel. When in the clinic or a contracted school, the Athletic Trainer also performs patient care duties such as injury assessment, supervising rehabilitation exercises, and providing treatments.

Responsibilities

• Develop and instruct injury prevention programs
• Develop rehabilitation programs for post-discharge patients
• Communicate with coaches, athletes, guardians, athletic trainers, and other healthcare providers regarding goals and techniques
• Select and apply preventive taping, bracing, and other equipment as appropriate
• Provide devices, fit to patient, and instruct in proper application and use
• Recognize injuries/conditions when they occur and provide appropriate medical referral
• Perform initial evaluation of injuries as well as immediate care
• Provide appropriate first aid when required, including CPR
• Develop and instruct reconditioning programs for injured athletes
• Manage healing wounds, to include inspection, treatment, and appropriate referral
• Apply and change sterile dressings as appropriate
• Fit patients with crutches and instruct on their safe use
• Assist clients with management of pain and swelling
• May include use of appropriate therapeutic modalities
• Clean equipment used to render treatment to patients on school facilities
• Consult with coaches regarding appropriate topics, including selection and purchase of equipment, health maintenance, injury prevention and maintenance, etc.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Benefit and Engagement or appropriate designee
• Counsel athletes and guardians regarding conditions, test results, prognosis, etc.
• Educate student athletic trainers as needed
• Perform other tasks as assigned by Sports Medicine and Reid Fitness Manager

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited program in Athletic Training
• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills appropriate to serve patients of all ages and those with special needs, developmental challenges, and/or communication impairments
• Completed supervised clinical experiences at sporting events as required for certification
• Maintain active CPR certification
• Licensed by the State of Indiana
• Certified by Board of Certification (BOC)
• BLS CPR certified
