About Our Team The Flex Publishers Team sits within the Journal and Editor Services Centre of Expertise (CoE) in the Customer Experience and Innovation (CE&I) group in STM journals. The CoE owns critical journal and editorial operational and administrative activities.
The Flex Publishers team consists of 15 Publishers located in Amsterdam, Bangalore, Beijing, Chennai, New York, Oxford, Paris, and Philadelphia. As an Associate Flex Publisher, you will play a vital role in maintaining continuity during publisher absences, ensuring portfolios remain well managed, strategic priorities stay on track, and strong editor relationships are sustained.
About The Role We are seeking a highly motivated Associate Flex Publisher to manage journal portfolios during periods of Publisher absence or leave. You will work across portfolios in any of the STMJ business units: LSSSE, PS, or HMS.
Assignments typically range from three months to one year, offering a unique opportunity to gain exposure to different portfolio management groups (PMGs), editorial communities, and team cultures. This variety makes the role both dynamic and highly developmental.
This is a full-time position based in our key publishing office in Beijing with hybrid working options available.
The Associate Flex Publisher reports to the Team Lead of the Flex Publishers, Helen Habernickel.
Key Responsibilities
- Support editors, authors, and editorial boards to help maintain a healthy flow of high-quality manuscript submissions.
- Managing relationships with journal editors, including supporting contract administration and communication.
- Contribute to the day-to-day management and maintenance of assigned journal portfolios, ensuring alignment with market developments.
- Monitor editorial and publishing workflows, identifying issues and escalating or supporting improvements where needed.
- Support budget tracking for editorial fees and contribute data or insights to pricing discussions.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with external stakeholders, including editors, authors, and society partners.
- Collaborate with internal teams, including CoE, operations, marketing, publishing, and technology, to support portfolio performance.
- Contribute to team projects and initiatives, supporting planning, coordination, and follow-up on actions.
Requirements

- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders across different regions and cultures.
- Experienced in internal systems, tools, and emerging technologies (including AI), with willingness to develop expertise.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Financial awareness and willingness to develop business acumen.
- Experience (typically 1-3 years) in journal publishing, project coordination, communications, or a related field preferred.
- University degree required.
- Positive, team-oriented mindset with a willingness to take initiative and grow in the role.
