The Cardiac Cath Lab Assistant Nurse Manager will support the Vision, Mission and Values of Miami VA Healthcare Center within his/her defined area of responsibility. He/she is engaged in administrative nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision making and enhanced skill in nursing management. The Cardiac-Cath Lab Assistant Nurse Manager, in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, will provide leadership in day-to-day operations of the Cardiac Cath-Lab/EP unit as well as the Heart Station unit and ECHO lab. He or she will input strategic planning process for the attainment of organizational goals. The Assistant Nurse Manager executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of patient care for adult and geriatric patients, in accordance with the Florida Nurse Practice Act, Medical Center, and VA standards of care.

The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for assisting the Nurse Manager with management of patient care in the Cardiac Cath Lab Unit. He/ She is responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating the patient care delivery system within the outpatient setting. Under the Nurse Manager, the Cardiac Cath-Lab Assistant Nurse Manager will manage staff, clinical operations, quality control, quality improvement measures, and strategic growth/development. This position requires a team player with a solid history of leading large teams, building successful relationships with physicians and a clinical background working in a Cardiac Cath-Lab. The Cardiac Cath-Lab Assistant Nurse Manager will join an excellent and expert multi-disciplinary team of heart care professionals to provide patients with excellent care in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular diseases. The Assistant Nurse Manager ensures that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with acceptable standards of care. He/ She is responsible for all issues that affect nursing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, functional statement, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols and competencies. The Assistant Nurse Manager will assist Nurse Manager with timely recruitment and staffing on a continual basis, validating the nursing hours per patient day, assuring fiscal accountability, and working with the Nurse Manager to identify and share resources. The Assistant Nurse Manager, in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, will assist with time schedules of the unit, dealing with employee conduct and performance issues, completing and submitting recurring reports in a timely manner. The Assistant Nurse Manager has continuing responsibility for all the following functions: (1) planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work; (2) assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates; (3) evaluating the performance of subordinates; (4) Implementing individual performance expectations on work and administrative matters; coaches, counsels, develops, and provides input to performance evaluations to enable employees to be successful in contributing to the achievement of individual and work group objectives. He/she will make recommendations for appointments, advancements, or reassignments of subordinates; (5) hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors; (7) recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate; and (8) ensuring appropriate orientation and identifying developmental training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training.

The Assistant Nurse Manager has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences. The Assistant Nurse Manager works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles. patient and/or staff issues. The Assistant Nurse Manager will maintain competency/proficiency in practice on their assigned unit and remain current with required certification for their unit, i.e., basic life support (BLS) and/or advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). The Assistant Nurse Manager reports to the Nurse Manager SICU/Cath Lab Manager who reports to the Chief Nurse-Surgery.

TOUR OF DUTY: Primarily Normal work days/hours will be Monday-Friday: 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with the flexibility to work other tours to meet unit/program objectives as required.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

U.S. citizenship.

English proficiency.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English. BLS and ACLS are required.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
  • Nurse III - A MSN in nursing or related field with BSN or bachelors degree in related field (if MSN obtained in a bridge Program no BSN required) with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Current BLS certification.

Preferred Experience:

  1. 2-3 years of recent nursing supervisory (charge nurse) or management experience.

  2. A minimum of 2-3 years recent successful practice within the last 5 years of cardiac cath lab experience.

  3. BSN/MSN preferred

  4. Advanced organizational skills, advanced oral/written communication skills.
