ASAP Specialist

Duties

• Develop an installation-wide ASAP Prevention Education Plan of Instruction that includes elements such as developing lesson plans for all training conducted for the substance abuse prevention training program, training aids, etc., for each target group identified, i.e., Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Training (ADAPT).
• Manage the installation Suicide Prevention Program in order to ensure that suicide prevention activities are carried out in accordance with governing regulations.
• Identify program areas in need of revision in order to improve program understanding and emphasis where needed.
• Serve as advisor to unit commanders on matters pertaining to drug and alcohol prevention and education.
• Coordinate with Risk Reduction Program (RRP) subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure identification of high risk behaviors and suicidal ideation within affected populations.
• Assess high-risk behavior in military units by determining the climate of the unit and possible linkage between varieties of behavior problems.

Basic Requirement for Army Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) Specialist (Prevention Coordinator (PC)/ Risk Reduction Program (RRP)/ Suicide Prevention Program Manager (SPPM):
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, such as Social Science, Psychology, Social Work, etc.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
OR
C. Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: applying the principles, methods and practices of behavioral/social sciences to evaluate the need for direct services, training, and/or coordination with other agencies to plan and manage ASAP programs; developing and administering installation-wide ASAP prevention and education program to include goals, objectives and milestones for military and civilian employees; developing and coordinating a continuing training program for unit prevention leader (UPL), providing on-going technical guidance on ASAP areas of instruction; and ensuring the installations suicide prevention efforts involve post-wide education/awareness for all active duty, family members and civilian work force. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

• Knowledge in Alcohol and Drug Program Functions
• Skill Managing Suicide Prevention Programs
• Ability to Communicate in Writing

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-09 grade (or equivalent).
