Ammunition and Explosive Handler Leader

Duties

The following list of duties is not conclusive but provides a brief snapshot of the duties that may be required for this position: A copy of the complete position description is available in the Human Resources Office.

Communicates instructions received from supervisor to work team, and initiates work (e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led). Works alongside, and partners with other workers, performing the duties of an Ammunition Inspector WG-6501-08 and sets the pace of co-workers being led. Conducts pre-issue inspection of ammunition items prior to issue. Assists in the inspection of ammunition, to include performing maintenance, care, preservation, shipping and storage operations, assuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety regulations, drawings, etc. during operations. Responsible for the requirements of all ammunition management documentation. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Generalized Experience:

Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidates ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.

Specialized Experience:

In addition to the journeyman level knowledge, must have 24 months experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related to the repair function of this occupational series. Must have the ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment. The ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies: Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be further evaluated by the nominating supervisor based on the following competencies considered essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

• Knowledge, capable, proficient, and capable to lead others in accomplishing the work of the group.
• Knowledge of the characteristics of the full range of explosives contained in the munitions involved in operations.
• Knowledge of the safety precautions and procedures necessary to be taken with the variety of munitions and explosives worked on.
• Knowledge of the full and detailed processes involved in the production line operations for maintenance of all munitions assigned to the depot.
• Knowledge of detonation and burning methods and procedures for the destruction of ammunition and explosives.
• Knowledge of basic electrical circuits and simple measuring instruments to set up, test, and operate electrical detonation systems.
• Knowledge to conduct in-process, standard sampling and visual and dimensional inspection in connection with field and plant inspections.
• Knowledge of electrical circuits when connecting and adjusting recording instruments. Relies on overall knowledge of ammunition products when performing acceptance/verification inspections, using various mechanical, chemical and physical tests.
• Knowledge of ammunition operations and techniques gained by experience on the job as well as some required academic training, and the interpretation and application of regulatory instructions.
• Skill in the operation of the full variety of machines and tools used in operations.
• Skill in the maintenance and minor repair of machines, tools, and equipment used in munitions maintenance.
• Skills in computer operation to be able to communicate in writing, input information onto spreadsheets, develop communications, memorandums, and correspondence.
• Skills when operating, reading and correcting data from a variety of measuring instruments such as test meters, temperature and humidity recorders, micrometers, chemical detection equipment, calipers, scales, torque wrenches and other similar instruments.
• Ability to perform chemical/physical and electrical tests on various types of ammunition to ascertain its serviceability, quality, condition, and rate of deterioration.
• Ability to use gauges (e.g., ring, go-no-go, etc.).
• Ability to read and comprehend technical orders, technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and drawings.
• Ability to recognize the various munitions and explosives so as to apply the proper procedure for demilitarization or make determination for follow-on action.
• Ability to operate a forklift (less than 10,000 pounds lift capacity) to move, load, transfer, transport, and stack or un-stack palletized items in a safe manner.
• Ability to follow standard procedures in making adjustments required for a variety of frequently repeated testing assignments.

Quality of Experience: Length of time is not of itself qualifying. Candidates' experience should be evaluated on the basis of duties performed rather than strictly on the rank of the individual; however, established compatibility criteria/assignments must be followed. The applicant's record of experience, training, and education must show possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to fully perform the duties of the position to be filled.
