Airport Electrician

About This Role

This role involves performing journey-level electrical work to ensure the safe, reliable, and uninterrupted operation of high- and low-voltage systems at SFO. The Airport Electrician will support testing and troubleshooting critical electrical infrastructure, help prevent outages, and offer technical guidance to tenants and contractors. The position also includes maintaining accurate records and adhering to operational policies to ensure compliance and support airport-wide electrical reliability.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, operate, and adjust electrical primary power substations ranging from 2,300 to 12,000 voltage, including circuit breakers, relays, batteries, and controls
• Maintain high voltage power lines; locate and isolate faulty sections and remove, install, and make connections where necessary
• Install watt-hour meter systems, connect potential transformers, current transformers, phase shifting transformers, test switches, reactive meters, demand meters, and watt-hour meters
• Maintain, operate, and repair the 5,000-volt airfield runway lighting system, including taxiways, guidance sign system, airways code beacon, rotating beacon, and hazard lights
• Maintain, operate, and repair electric motors and control apparatus used in pumping drainage water and sewage
• Maintain, operate, and adjust standby engine generators used for emergency power; check electrical failures for the airport and tenants in the absence of tenant personnel in cases of emergency
• Collect data for engineer's planned expansion projects and meet with tenants and contractors to advise on the availability of facilities for future expansion projects
• Inspect completed work for compliance with airport standards and requirements
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

• Completion of a recognized electrician's (Line worker or Inside Wireman) apprenticeship program
• Two (2) years of verifiable journey-level electrician experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of high voltage (above 600 volts) industrial power transmission and distribution systems
• Possession of a valid California driver's license

Substitution:

• Additional experience as a journey-level electrician, performing installation, servicing, and repair to electrical systems, devices, and related components can be substituted for the five (5) year apprenticeship program, on a year for year basis

Nice to have:

• Two years experience using medium voltage test equipment
• Capable of safely differentiating live versus dead lines using a contact tester
• Demonstrated experience working safely on electrical systems operating above 600 volts
• Medium voltage cable splicing experience
• Familiarity with the operation and basic troubleshooting of medium-voltage substation controls
• Experience with airfield lighting systems
