TOUR OF DUTY: Sunday through Thursday - 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

*** The incumbent of this position is designated as "Emergency / Essential" and will be required to report to work during emergencies, inclement weather conditions and other emergency conditions. ***

This position is located in the Library Buildings and Grounds, Facilities Operations Division, Maintenance Branch, HVAC Section. The incumbent is responsible for assisting higher-graded maintenance mechanics in the performance of basic repair and maintenance work in the areas of air conditioning, electricity and plumbing.

The following duties and responsibilities will be performed under the supervision of a higher-graded maintenance mechanic or supervisor.

Assists in the basic repair, maintenance and operation of air conditioning systems throughout the Library of Congress buildings and small complexes. Specifically, the incumbent will assist in the repair of humidifiers, dehumidifiers, fans, pumps and other equipment. Assists with operating and maintaining pneumatic and Direct Digital Controls (DDC). Wipes, oils and greases pumps, motors and fans. Keeps drip pans clean and free from excess oil. Scrubs and washes out cooling towers. Removes dust accumulation from ventilating grills. Removes, cleans and replaces filters. Records temperature and pressure gauge readings.

Assists with completing simple and routine repairs to plumbing systems. Assists with the assembly, installation and repair of pipes, fittings and fixtures of water and drainage systems. Cuts and threads already measured and marked pipes. Tightens pipe connections. Removes, cleans, replaces, packs and seals defective parts of utility, supply and disposal systems such as dirty traps and leaky drains.

Under the close direction of a higher-graded maintenance mechanic, works from clear-cut oral and written instructions, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings and electrical maintenance and repair manuals. Assists higher-graded maintenance mechanics in the performance of basic electrical repair and maintenance work on outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators and circuit breakers. Installs equipment on foundations and brackets; secures equipment; performs preliminary equipment tests and makes minor or repetitive repairs. Assists with locating broken, worn, damaged or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment. Assists with pulling, tagging and securing cable. Cuts, bends and mounts electrical conduit. Locates, responds to and clears fire and smoke detectors.
