AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

Duties

You will install, repair, overhaul and perform maintenance on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning unit and systems such as walk-in and reach in refrigerators, attic and evaporative fans, walk in freezers, dehumidifiers, ventilating systems, and other equipment of comparable complexity. Diagnose and locate malfunctions, disassemble, repair, replace and/or adjust thermostats, pressurestats, humistats, relays, switches, and other automatic control devices; disassembles and repairs compressors and related components; service and repair evaporators, condensers, and receivers; and repack valves, replace electric motors, belts and pulleys, lubricate moving parts, replace and/or clean filters, bleed excessive load conditions. Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair ventilation equipment, including exhaust fans, circulating fans, and fresh air fans. Assist in starting, stopping, logging, etc., of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element applicants should document experience repairing refrigeration and air conditioning units such as coolers, water dispensers, commissary coolers/freezer, unit comfort coolers and fans; interpreting oral instructions or reading work orders to determine work required; locating malfunctioning parts and replacing as needed such items as belts, fans and fuses; AND identifying the tools and testing devices needed to find or replace defective parts. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves strenuous, heavy physical effort in constantly reaching, bending, and turning. Equipment worked on is large and must be moved in and out of specific locations. Frequently sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 75 pounds and occasionally heavier. Weight handling equipment is available when handling large units. Ladders, scaffolds, and platforms may be used when working on large systems or roofs.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside, in all types of weather. Subject to sudden temperature changes and extreme cold during repair of large walk-in refrigerators and in mechanical rooms having extreme temperatures. Exposed to possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders and scaffolds. Exposed to possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders and scaffolds. Exposed to possibility of injury from electrical current. Exposed to cleaning chemicals. Protective devices such as but not limited to ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat and safety shoes are required. Steel toe shoes, hard hats and safety glasses, are required at all times. Long trousers or coveralls and shirt or tee shirt with sleeves are worn.
