AIR CARGO SPECIALIST

Duties
As a AIR CARGO SPECIALIST, WG-5201-5/8/10, you will inspect a variety of airdrop equipment such as parachutes, multi loop lines, extraction transfer force couplings, latch assembly couplings, cable assembly couplings, actuator assembly, release cargo parachute M-1, lanyard arming wire, connector parachute, timer delay assembly, link lower suspension, link assembly single suspension type IV, link assembly heavy duty, link 4 point, parachute release single knife, bracket suspension, and tie down cargo quick release. Perform visual, dimensional, and operational inspection of the above mentioned equipment at the prescribed times, in accordance with warnings, cautions, and notes and ground precautionary messages (GPM), for safety of flight. Make judgmental decisions on proximity to tolerances and interrelated dimensions on timer delay systems of M-1 release, latch assembly couplings, cable assembly couplings, and actuator assembly. Inspect for burrs, rough spots, corrosion, pits, cracks, welds, cuts, foreign material, bends, damaged threads, adjusting collars, set screws, shank pins, and that timers activate within specifications. Use a wide variety of inspection processes and techniques, and many unique and specially designed instruments and gauges (i.e., tension meters, scales, micrometers, gauges, torque wrenches, and protractors). Apply a variety of sophisticated techniques to inspect specialized and complex aircraft systems in accordance with Load Master's Manual.
Perform drop zone control operations as Drop Zone Controller/Safety Officer. Ensure items offered for transport by air meet proper specifications to maximize safety and security of the aircraft, aircrew, cargo and passengers. Plan, schedule, and train Air Transportation Operations Element Drill Status Guardsmen on the inspection and operations of aircraft loading equipment; mobility/contingency functions (i.e., load planning, pallet buildup, cargo courier responsibility and hazardous cargo preparation); and all core Career Field Education and Training Plan tasks. Monitor and administrate data systems, within the technical and functional parameters and standards established by USTRANSCOM and in coordination with the Assistant Under Secretary of Defense for Transportation Policy, to integrate DOD transportation information worldwide and provide transportation and In-Transit Visibility (ITV) data for commanders at all levels. Utilize automated systems, such as the Global Transportation Network (GTN), Cargo Movement Operation System (CMOS), Global Air Transportation Execution System (GATES), Global Decision Support System (GDSS), and Single Mobility System (SMS) for In-Transit Visibility. Analyze operational plans, policies, and procedures for air terminal activities and facilities essential to air passenger and cargo movement processes. Coordinate with explosive safety and other appropriate agencies on areas designated for parking, loading, and servicing of aircraft with explosive/hazardous cargo. Interpret higher headquarters policies and implement actions of the air terminal management function within the Readiness Flight. Coordinate on development and application of base-wide air terminal operation plans supporting wartime operations, contingencies, natural disasters, and incidents on/off base. Control all aircraft cargo space allocated to each mission and is responsible for obtaining maximum utilization on each mission. Plan, select, sequence, and monitor each aircraft cargo load and initiates and ensure all cargo manifests are prepared. Obtain maximum utilization of space using automated programs such as Automated Air Load Planning System (AALPS). Determine helicopter employment considerations, coordinate with supporting aviation units, and safely plan and execute sling load operations. Rig and prepare equipment for recovery by helicopter sling load. Inspect sling load equipment that includes reach pendant, sling set, and static discharge wand. Establish and prepare area for pickup and landing zone. Maintain air to ground radio communications with supporting aircraft. Determine sling attachment points, taking into consideration structural integrity of equipment to be sling loaded. Perform safety briefing with aircrew and sling load team coordinating normal and emergency evacuation locations for aircraft and sling load team. Direct and supervise all ground crew on rigging and de-rigging operations. Direct and control helicopter pre-positioning over load. Assign hook up team duties and determine hook up equipment requirements. Perform inspection and certification of sling loads on DA Form 7382- R (Sling Inspection Record).

Qualifications
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates the knowledge of equipment and practices associated with the type of work to be done.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-10 level: Must possess 18 months: (1) Experience in verifying cargo against manifest and inspecting for damage or unusual condition of shipment; (2) Experience which demonstrates the applicant's knowledge of appropriate cargo locations considering factors such as use, size, shape of cargo. Knowledge of storing and handling of hazardous cargo; (3) Experience in weight and balance computations, distribution and palletizing of loads. Experience in using forklifts; (4) Experience in using automated or manual means to complete air movement records or reports; (5) Experience in operating sewing machines, punch presses, and stenciling machines. Experience in inspecting parachutes and identifying defective equipment; (6) Experience in using navigational aids to determine timing points and marking drop zones. WG-08 Level - Must possess 12 months experience as listed above. WG-05 Level - Must possess 6 months experience as listed above.
