Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

  • The purpose of this position is to sort and distribute mail delivered to the Lansing Correctional Facility in an efficient manner and to ensure that distribution of mail both incoming and outgoing is completed in a timely manner.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Sorts all incoming mail, which includes first class mail flats, newspapers, and magazines separating staff mail from resident mail. Locate first class resident mail using the mail-processing program and place the located mail in designated container to be inspected by appropriate mail room staff. Locate resident newspaper and place in designated mailbags.
  • Inspect resident nail by opening the mail correspondence, newspapers, and magazines reviewing for contents in accordance with KAR 44-12-601, for contraband such as foreign substances, money, personal checks, and cashier's checks among other items. Ensure that contraband is not introduced into the institution through the incoming mail. Apply guidelines from KAR, IMPPs, and Resident Rule Book to determine items of contraband or application to censorship guidelines to eliminate introduction of sexually explicit, violence, gang activity, child porn, and other security threatening items.
  • Review legal mail and official mail for residents. Locate and process into appropriate unit boxes maintaining confidentiality and security. Locate and distribute inter facility and departmental mail. Receive and sort packages. Those addressed to residents are logged and go directly to the property cart, staff packages are separated and notification made of the arrival of packages.
  • Process outgoing resident mail by comparing letters against a list to determine mail that is considered readable mail, then sorts and bundles this mail for the purpose of forwarding to the Intelligence and Investigation Section. Pulls resident to resident mail, checks against current approved list and returns it or processes it for delivery. Prepares outgoing unstamped mail by placing appropriate postage on each envelope using the postage meter, to ensure that the authorized free letters have postage placed on them and are then forwarded to the post office.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications**:**

  • Six months of experience in general office, clerical, or administrative support work. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications**:**

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements**:**

  • Must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties. May be required to pass a background check.
