About This Role
This role involves dispatching for police, fire, and paramedics, handling all emergency and non-emergency calls, processing information, assessing needs, and dispatching appropriate public safety resources. The work includes answering telephone lines, operating radio equipment, alerting units, tracking unit status, providing lifesaving instructions, and monitoring alarm systems and visitor access.
Responsibilities
- Receive calls reporting emergencies or non-emergencies and determine necessary action
- Alert and dispatch Police and/or Fire-Rescue units to incidents requiring assistance
- Keep track of the status and location of on-duty Police and Fire-Rescue units when on a call
- Support Police and Fire-Rescue field units' requests for information/assistance by accessing available databases or information resources and requesting other agencies/services to respond as necessary
- For calls involving life-threatening emergency medical situations and when the caller is willing, provide lifesaving medical instructions to assist the victim
- Monitor Station Alarm systems and control visitor access using video camera monitoring equipment and door lock release switches in the Communications Center
- Search, retrieve, change, and update information filed in several computer systems
- Train new personnel and document their progress on Daily Observation reports
Requirements
- High school degree or GED equivalent
- Passing score of 80% or higher on the Criticall Testing software
- CPR certification required within 6 months of hire
- National Academy of Emergency Dispatch certification required within 6 months of hire
- Florida Crime Information Center/CJNET certification required within 6 months of hire
Nice to have:
- Valid State of Florida Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification
- One year experience in a dispatch center as an emergency call taker and emergency services dispatcher
- Knowledge of the OSSI Computer Aided Dispatch system
- Knowledge of the FCIC/NCIC computer system
