911 Emergency Dispatcher

About This Role

Directing emergency service units to scenes and maintaining communication with them and with callers is the core of this dispatcher role. The position suits a candidate with good judgment and communication skills who is comfortable talking to people in various emotional states.

Responsibilities

• Answer emergency calls within Franklin County, IN, and surrounding areas
• Determine the nature of calls and the location of callers
• Monitor the location of emergency service personnel in the assigned territory
• Direct the appropriate type and number of emergency service units to emergency scenes
• Maintain communication with dispatched units to monitor their response
• Maintain communication with callers to monitor emergency situations and give first-aid instructions if necessary
• Provide emergency assistance including emergency medical dispatch, fire service dispatch, law enforcement dispatch, and pre-arrival instructions as needed

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 18+ years of age
• Ability to operate various computer and communication equipment (learned through 6 to 8 weeks of on-the-job training)
• Good judgment skills to prioritize calls by order of importance
• Good communication skills to relay information between parties
• Good speaking skills and comfort talking to people in various emotional states
• Comfort reading maps and familiarity with assigned territories
• Good customer service skills
