The Mental Health Liaison Nurse team is part of the Department of Psychological Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE). The department is responsible for providing a liaison psychiatry service to the acute hospital, including input into specialist tertiary services. The department works at the interface between physical and mental health and attempt to bridge the gap between both in order to provide joint-up and integrated care.
As a mental health nurse working in a busy tertiary acute hospital you will utilise your specialist clinical knowledge to inform decision making and clinical judgment. You will carry out specialist bio-psycho-social mental health and risk assessments for patients attending Acute Medical Unit, the Emergency Department and other areas of the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh (RIE) where patients are receiving medical treatment. You will utilise high levels of specialist clinical assessment, decision making and clinical judgement to formulate appropriate plan of care for patients with mental health issues. You will also carry a small outpatient caseload and may be required to provide support and follow-up to specified patient groups.
As well as the above, you will be a specialist resource and source of support for colleagues across medical and surgical specialities, providing specialist advice to the multidisciplinary team in relation to the management of patient in partnership with the patient/Carer.
While there is autonomous working, you will work very closely with other specialist nurses including alcohol liaison specialists, consultant psychiatrists and resident medical staff. It’s a vibrant team that is keen to support people’s development. The department was short-listed in the ‘Mental Health’ category at the Scottish Health Awards in 2022.
This is a full-time post. The hours of work are Monday-Friday 09:00-17:00. Weekends are worked on a rota basis (currently 1 in 4).
