About the role
The Role Tesla’s Low Voltage Distribution team is seeking a Mechanical Design Intern to support the design of LV harness components for Tesla’s production EVs. Our team owns connectors, brackets, clips, busbars, terminals, and grommets. You will work alongside experienced engineers on these electro-mechanical parts, including CAD modeling and prototype validation.
We are also building Next Generation Interconnect technology to re-design low voltage electrical power/signal distribution for high-volume automated manufacturing. This internship is a hands-on opportunity to learn how harness components go from concept to vehicle.
Ideal candidates are curious, fast-learning, and eager to work on real hardware. Prior internship or project experience is a plus, not a must.
Responsibilities
- Assist in assessing and documenting engineering requirements for LV harness components, including connectors, brackets, clips, busbars, terminals, and grommets
- Support gathering input from cross-functional teams and help synthesize it into design concepts
- Develop CAD models under guidance: system interfaces, master models, and detailed metal/plastic parts (Catia V5/V6 preferred; SolidWorks or equivalent also welcome)
- Assist in creating 2-D part drawings and basic GD&T documentation
- Support product lifecycle management (PLM) work, including structured bills-of-materials
- Help fabricate proof-of-concept prototypes to validate design feasibility
- Support vendor communication for prototype parts
- Assist in assembling prototype systems and executing basic design validation tests
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Coursework or project experience in CAD; Catia V5/V6 is a plus
- Basic knowledge of materials, fabrication methods, and mechanical design fundamentals (tolerance, solid mechanics, etc.)
- Interest in electro-mechanical product design, harness hardware (connectors, brackets, clips, busbars, terminals, grommets), or automotive systems
- Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and willingness to learn manufacturing and assembly processes
- Ability to communicate clearly in English (written and verbal); Mandarin is a plus
- Hands-on project, competition, or internship experience (robotics, Formula SAE, consumer electronics, etc.) is preferred
Nice to have
- Exposure to GD&T, tolerance stack-up, or DFM/DFA concepts
- Interest in connectors, wiring, EMI shielding, or thermal considerations in electronic assemblies
- Familiarity with PLM tools or BOM structure
