Zoos today operate in a world where the diversity of natural ecosystems, or biodiversity, is increasingly threatened. These are precisely the institutions that have the ability to encompass the entire spectrum of conservation activities, from research, through ex-situ conservation (including breeding endangered species and educational activities), to participation in in-situ projects directly in the field. Education and Learning Every year, more than 600 million visitors of various ages and interests come to zoos worldwide. A zoo thus influences a wide public and interest groups through its educational and learning activities. Thanks to the invaluable potential of live animals, it can influence visitors' opinions, attitudes, values, and behavior. Animal Husbandry As a modern institution of its kind, Prague Zoo creates the most optimal conditions for the animals in its care, both in the concept and design of enclosures and habitats, and in the composition of single- or multi-species groups. Visitors can thus get an idea of the animals' lives and their connections to the environment, and the animals have the opportunity to develop the widest possible range of natural behaviors. The animal populations at Prague Zoo and a list of current new arrivals can be found here. Ex-situ Conservation Prague Zoo has long been involved in ex-situ animal conservation. It creates insurance breeding groups for species that are immediately endangered in the wild, but for which efforts for reintroduction are already underway or can be expected. In-situ Conservation Prague Zoo is increasingly involved in in-situ projects aimed at conserving animals directly in their natural habitats. This includes participation in the reintroduction of endangered species into reserves and the wild, or providing methodological and material assistance in these areas. The programs concern, among others, Przewalski's horse, western lowland gorilla, addax, northern bald ibis, European bison, black stork, bearded vulture, griffon vulture, blotched snake, European ground squirrel, black-crowned night heron, boreal owl, barn owl, and little owl.
