Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) is the result of the merger between the A. Dumont Hospital in Waterschei, the Sint-Barbaraziekenhuis in Lanaken, and the Sint-Jansziekenhuis in Genk. This merger, which took place on December 31, 1995, was a logical consequence of the close cooperation that had already existed between the hospitals since 1992. On January 1, 2021, ZOL merged with Ziekenhuis Maas en Kempen in Maaseik. Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg is an autonomous healthcare institution, in accordance with the provisions of Part 3, Title 4, Chapter 3 of the decree of December 22, 2017, on local government. As a 'association subject to the decree of December 22, 2017, on local government,' Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg is therefore a public healthcare institution. Each of the four hospitals of ZOL has its own history. Medisch Centrum André Dumont and the Sint-Barbaraziekenhuis find their origins in the mining activities in the eastern mining basin of the province. The Sint-Jansziekenhuis was founded by the Commission of Public Assistance of the municipality of Genk (the predecessor of the current OCMW-Genk). Ziekenhuis Maas en Kempen opened its doors in September 2017. ZOL Genk has 805 beds for hospitalization and day clinic places. These are located on campus Sint-Jan (Genk) and campus Sint-Barbara (Lanaken). ZOL Maas en Kempen (Maaseik) has 213 beds. In 2021, 42,434 patients were admitted to ZOL and 104,129 day clinic treatments were performed. The outpatient clinics registered 655,939 consultations from ambulatory patients. In the operating rooms, 55,287 procedures were performed, and in the delivery rooms, 2,624 births were recorded. The Emergency Department counted 64,482 patient contacts. A team of 400 doctors and 4,000 professionals works every day to fulfill the hospital's mission: providing patient-friendly, high-quality healthcare.
