Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin

About Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin

The Central and State Library Berlin (ZLB) is the largest public library in Germany with over 3.7 million media and approximately 1.3 million visits per year. Its two locations are the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) in Berlin-Kreuzberg and the Berliner Stadtbibliothek (BStB) in Berlin-Mitte. Here the city shares its knowledge, here we share media, technologies and space, here people meet for exchange and discourse, here participation in the analog as well as the digital world is actively lived. The ZLB is a public law foundation, headed by Jonas Fansa. In the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek in Kreuzberg, you will find the humanities and the "fine" arts, fiction, films, music and the artothek. The children's and youth library with the learning center is also located here. The Berliner Stadtbibliothek in Mitte houses, among other things, the fields of natural sciences, medicine and economics, as well as the Berlin Senate Library with local studies and the field of law. The Berlin Studies and the Historical Collections of the ZLB offer extensive holdings on the history and present of Berlin in their own reading rooms. As the Berlin State Library, we have the mandate to collect all printed works, data and sound carriers published in Berlin. The Central and State Library Berlin Foundation was created in 1995 from the merger of the Berlin City Library on Schlossplatz in the East and the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek on Hallesches Ufer in the West of Berlin. Together we are the most visited public cultural and educational institution in Berlin. We know – the division into two locations is inconvenient and uncomfortable for you. Therefore, we are committed to merging the library into one location.
