About Westnetz

Westnetz is the electricity and gas distribution network operator in western Germany. Based in Dortmund, we are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the energy company Westenergie AG. We operate networks belonging to various owners, which we make available to all market participants on a non-discriminatory basis. We build, plan, and operate a network from Emsland to Hunsrück, from the Dutch border to the Weserbergland. With 5,800 employees, 175,000 km of electricity and 24,000 km of gas networks, we at Westnetz have been ensuring for many years that western Germany is supplied with energy without disruption and efficiently around the clock. And today? The current challenges for network operators are enormous. The energy transition in Germany and the world, and the increasing decentralization through photovoltaics and wind energy, present us with major tasks. Today, electricity no longer flows in only one direction, from producer to consumer, but also in the reverse direction – and this with constant, weather-dependent feed-in fluctuations.
