The Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter GmbH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Salzgitter AG and the group's central logistics provider. In addition to internal rail transport at the Salzgitter, Peine, and Ilsenburg steelworks, VPS carries out numerous nationwide transports for the group's steel companies. The approximately 700 VPS employees move around 42 million tons of goods by rail per year with currently 57 locomotives and around 1,800 freight wagons. The VPS is one of the most important and experienced railway companies in Germany. It is the tenth largest of approximately 150 German railway companies and possesses decades of practical know-how. In addition to numerous logistics services, VPS operates the inland and industrial port in Salzgitter Beddingen and is involved in the development of innovative railway technologies.
