Usiminas is a leading steel company in the production and commercialization of hot and cold-rolled flat steel, coils, plates, and coated products, primarily for the capital goods and white goods consumer sectors, as well as the automotive industry. As the leader in the Brazilian flat steel market, Usiminas has an installed capacity to produce 9.5 million tons per year. It is the largest and most modern flat steel integrated steelworks in Latin America. Present in 7 Brazilian states, Usiminas group companies operate across the entire steel production chain: from ore extraction – through product processing according to customer specifications and transportation by road, rail, or sea – to transforming steel into manufactured goods, such as large-scale equipment and metal structures. It was founded on April 25, 1956, in Ipatinga, in what would become the Vale do Aço, Minas Gerais. Its corporate and legal constitution was drawn up on this date by Gabriel Andrade Janot Pacheco, and its first president was engineer Amaro Lanari Júnior. In 1964, Ipatinga, 220 km from Belo Horizonte, became emancipated from Ipatinga, and Usiminas became located in this new municipality. Its administrative headquarters are in Belo Horizonte, across from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and next to BH-TEC. The Usiminas System stands out as the largest flat steel integrated steelworks in Latin America and one of the 20 largest in the world. Usiminas leads the System, which comprises companies operating in steelmaking and in businesses where steel has strategic importance. It currently designates a pool of several companies, committed to transparency in its relationship with the capital markets.
