The present-day University Hospital Essen began its work in 1909 as a "Municipal Hospital" with four clinics. Since then, UK Essen has continuously grown and developed, achieving university status in 1963. As a maximum-care hospital, UK Essen is now the largest single-site university hospital in the Ruhr area, making it the "Hospital of the Ruhr Metropolis." With 1,300 beds and over 8,000 employees, UK Essen treats approximately 55,000 inpatients and around 300,000 outpatients annually.
