The University of La Réunion was created in 1970 as the University Center of La Réunion, following the 1968 Higher Education Orientation Law. It initially comprised three Teaching and Research Units: Law-Economics, Letters, and Sciences. The university center became a public institution with a scientific and cultural character, possessing legal personality and financial autonomy. In 1982, the university center became a full-fledged university. In 1984, La Réunion island gained its own academy. The University of La Réunion is a French higher education and research institution located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, within one of Europe's outermost regions. Due to its unique geostrategic position, it is the only European university in this part of the world. Each year, it welcomes nearly 12,000 students across more than 80,000 m² of buildings spread over the Saint-Denis campuses (Moufia, La Victoire, Parc Technologique Universitaire, and Bellepierre), as well as those in Le Tampon and Saint-Pierre. Through its educational offerings, research activities, international influence, and student living conditions, the University of La Réunion possesses numerous strengths to fully play its role as an interface between Europe and the Indian Ocean.
