In 1962, the odyssey of some pioneering families began. Faced with the intellectual disability of their child, referred to as "unadapted," they refused to accept fate. They grouped together and fought so that their children, who carried "a difference unlike others," would no longer be left behind but could be recognized. They dared to "imagine the unimaginable" by inventing concepts that led to concrete solutions for support tailored to their needs. The Apei of Poitiers and the Apei of Civray, parent associations (under the 1901 law) that merged into the Adapei 86 in 2004, have tirelessly worked and continue to work, with the support of internal professionals and the recognition of public authorities, indispensable administrative and financial partners. They strive to create innovative establishments and services while forging valuable complementary links with other local actors. To best meet the diversity and evolution of needs, as well as the personalization of life paths for people with intellectual disabilities, and to design with and for them a brighter future as "full citizens," this is the meaning of our solidarity and intergenerational commitment, resolutely focused on the challenges of tomorrow to be met together! Affiliated with Unapei and a member of Urapei Poitou-Charentes, Adapei 86 currently supports 700 people, across all ages and projects, within 21 establishments and services spread across the Vienne department. In 2020, Adapei 86 was renamed Unapei 86.
