Trosa municipality is a young municipality with ancient traditions. The area around Trosa has been populated for a very long time. Traces remain to this day. The countryside around Vagnhärad and Västerljung is rich in ancient monuments – runestones, burial mounds, and ancient forts bear witness to a coastal landscape populated by farmers and fishermen. The tranquil Trosaån river flows through the municipality, the old boat connection with Mälaren that made Trosa an important trading town. Today's Trosa was just an archipelago at that time and the then-town was located approximately where Trosa country church is today. Trosa, Vagnhärad, and Västerljung belonged to Nyköping municipality for a few years, but in 1992 the large municipality was divided and Trosa municipality was formed. A total of approximately 11,900 inhabitants live here today. During the summer months, the population increases significantly and the tourism industry is an important element. Since the 2014 election, a bourgeois majority has governed Trosa municipality for the third consecutive term. The bourgeois majority in Trosa is composed of the Moderates, Liberals, Centre Party, and Christian Democrats. The Social Democrats, the Green Party, and the Left Party together form the opposition in Trosa municipality. Since the 2010 election, the Sweden Democrats have also been represented in the municipal council. Trosa municipality has steady growth in an expansive region and has a strong business sector alongside low unemployment. The proximity to Stockholm, along with the unique archipelago and cultural environment, are some of the factors that contribute to many choosing to settle here.
