When the Company started, Calvin Coolidge was President, the U.S. population was about 117 million people, and there were few than 18 million automobiles and truck in the country. G.W. Van Keppel, a Dutch immigrant, started the business by selling concrete mixers and pavers, longitudinal finishers, cranes, and a few other items contractors needed to build some of the first real roads in Kansas City and Missouri. The Van Keppel Company survived the Great Depression with the help of great relationships built within the Kansas City community and by understanding that "Our only excuse for existing is to provide service to our customers to help them build the most with the equipment the manufacturer has produced." The Company has grown its business lines as heavy machinery technology has evolved, expanding from its initial road-building equipment to asphalt paving and crushing, quarry machinery building and supplies, machinery servicing and maintenance, sales and rentals, and most recently to selling new and used parts. Although long since passed, G.W. Van Keppel lives on through the strong leadership of Mr. Van Keppel's grandson, Bill Walker. "Our industry has undergone tremendous changes through the years but one thing that doesn't change is that the contractors, our customers, need someone to stand with them, represent them and serve them...I'm very proud of the people at The G.W.
