Worldwide, millions of people are forced to flee war, violence, and persecution. Almost half of them are children. Save the Children, UNICEF Netherlands, and War Child joined forces in 2016 in TeamUp: a program for refugee children. Refugee children have often experienced a lot. In their country of origin and during the journey to the Netherlands, they are exposed to war, violence, and stressful situations. Unfortunately, the uncertainty and stress do not stop here. In the Netherlands, for example, children often have to move and worry about their parents and friends. This makes them fearful or insecure. They often have nightmares at night and are quiet and withdrawn or aggressive during the day. They generally find it difficult to trust people. Through their years of experience and global expertise, the three organizations know how important it is to help these children early on. Children are resilient, but they must be given the opportunity to process their traumatic experiences. At TeamUp, we do something about that. TeamUp contributes to the psychosocial well-being of refugee children and children with a migration background through play and movement. It offers them a safe space to release stress and tension. Through play, children learn to deal with emotions such as fear, anger, and sadness. The skills they acquire at TeamUp are linked to social-emotional themes, which are useful in their daily lives. The activities: Contribute to stability and structure for children and ensure that children can ‘be children’ again; Reduce the chance that children will develop further psychosocial problems in the long term; Ensure that children who need more social-emotional support are identified and referred to the right institution; Ensure that children's resilience is strengthened so that they can better cope with stressors such as bullying, anger, and fear. TeamUp in many different regions. The project is currently running at over 39 reception locations spread across the country. The ultimate goal is to reach as many refugee children as possible with TeamUp. That is why we are looking for volunteers to help guide the activities for about four hours a week. You will be trained and supported by TeamUp and will start working at a location near you. For more information, go to: www.sollicitatieteamup.nl
