Founded over 80 years ago by visionary elected officials who wanted to pool the resources of their local authorities, the Syndicat des Eaux et de l’Assainissement Alsace-Moselle (SDEA) is a public inter-municipal cooperation establishment that brings together communes, groups of communes (syndicates, federations of communes and urban communities), the Eurométropole of Strasbourg, and the European Collectivity of Alsace (CEA). The SDEA employs 750 staff members performing over 130 highly technical professions, and provides a high-performing public service for drinking water, wastewater treatment, aquatic environment management, and flood prevention. It serves more than one million users in 744 member communes in Alsace-Moselle and today constitutes a specialized inter-municipal cooperation tool, recognized nationally and internationally, as well as an element of local identity.
