Stadt Lüdenscheid

About Stadt Lüdenscheid

Lüdenscheid is the district town and a large district-affiliated town of the Märkischer Kreis, located in the northwest of the Sauerland region in the Arnsberg administrative district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city has 71,230 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2021). The nickname "Bergstadt" (Mountain Town) has been frequently used for decades and was incorporated into the official name of the third municipal grammar school, among other things. "City of Light" is a more recent attribute used for city marketing, referring to Lüdenscheid's lamp and lighting industry. Lüdenscheid forms the cultural and economic center of the southern Märkischer Kreis with influence beyond its borders. Functionally, it is a central place with partial functions of a higher center. Before the territorial reforms of the 1970s, the city was the most populous in the Sauerland and Southwestphalia regions.
