The Swedish Maritime Administration is one of three government agencies responsible for developing transport and maritime policy in line with the decisions of the Riksdag and the government. The agency monitors how shipping develops in relation to the transport policy goals, provides advice and support within its unique area of expertise, and works to reduce the negative environmental impact of shipping. Responsible for the sea lanes The Swedish Maritime Administration is responsible for ensuring that the sea lanes are navigable, accessible, and safe. Geographically, this means the operations are conducted in Swedish coastal waters and the large lakes (Vänern, Vättern, and Mälaren), Göta älv, and the canals in Trollhättan, Södertälje, and Falsterbo. Our responsibility for the sea lanes extends to the port areas, where the municipality or port company takes over. Operations in international waters are governed by our agreements with the EU and the UN's International Maritime Organization IMO. It is the Swedish Maritime Administration that builds, maintains, and develops the infrastructure at sea, our blue highways. With our help, the state maintains fairways by surveying and marking the fairways, producing nautical charts and other maritime geographical information, and offering a range of important services, such as icebreaking, piloting, and maritime traffic information to all the thousands of vessels moving in our waters. All this is done by the agency with a primary focus on commercial shipping, but our customers also include recreational boats, fishing, and the navy. The Swedish Maritime Administration works together with the Swedish Transport Administration and is responsible for parts of the long-term, national infrastructure planning.
