The Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) is a private non-profit entity created in 1972 with the mission to promote the competitiveness and sustainable development of micro and small businesses. The institution also focuses on strengthening entrepreneurship and accelerating the formalization of the economy through partnerships with the public and private sectors, training programs, access to credit and innovation, promotion of associativism, trade fairs, and business rounds. Part of this effort gained visibility with the approval of the General Law for Micro and Small Enterprises in December 2006. The law consolidated in a single document the set of incentives that should prevail for the segment at the federal, state, and municipal levels of public administration, including in the tax area. One of the provisions of the General Law, the Federal Simples, already regulated, represented a great gain for micro and small businesses in terms of reducing bureaucracy, tax burden, and operational costs. Another provision, Government Procurement, benefited the segment by representing a fundamental business niche for increasing the turnover and competitiveness of small businesses. These actions reinforce Sebrae's role as an entrepreneurship promoter and reveal the importance of formalization for the Brazilian economy. Our role is to show the millions of micro and small business owners in this country the advantages of having a formal business, pointing out paths and solutions, with the aim of facilitating access to financial services, technology, and the market, always focusing on business competitiveness.
