Robi Axiata PLC. is a subsidiary of Axiata Group Berhad, based in Malaysia, with Bharti Airtel International (Singapore) Pte Ltd. as another shareholder. Robi is the second largest mobile network operator in Bangladesh, serving 46.88 million subscribers as of December 2018. The company began operations in 1997 as Telekom Malaysia International (Bangladesh) under the brand name Aktel. In 2010, it was rebranded as Robi and the company name changed to Robi Axiata Limited. Following its merger with Airtel Bangladesh, the combined entity, Robi Axiata Limited, began commercial operations on November 16, 2016. This merger was the largest in Bangladesh and the first in the country's mobile telecom sector. Robi was the first operator to introduce GPRS and 3.5G services in Bangladesh and the first to launch 4.5G service in all 64 districts on February 20, 2018. By the end of 2018, Robi established the largest 4.5G network in the country with nearly 7,400 sites, covering 99 percent of the country's thanas. Robi also has the widest international roaming coverage with 398 operators in 182 countries, including the widest 4G roaming footprint in 29 countries with 40 operators. The company has introduced numerous digital services and pioneered mobile financial services for rural and semi-urban areas. It is the only mobile operator to have successfully trialed 5G and Voice over LTE technology on its 4.5G network.
