Conad is the acronym for Consorzio Nazionale Dettaglianti (National Retailers Consortium). It is headquartered in Bologna and is currently made up of 8 cooperatives of retailers, operating in all Italian regions, unlike many large-scale retail organizations (GDO). Outside of Italian territory, Conad is present in the Republic of San Marino, Albania, and Malta. The Conad was founded in Bologna on May 13, 1962, by 14 purchasing groups from central-northern Italy, as a coordinating structure. Around 1973, a common brand, sales and promotion policy were defined, as well as the rationalization and mergers of the purchasing groups. In the late eighties, the modernization of the sales network began, and from 1994, the differentiation of brands took place: Conad for supermarkets, Margherita - Conad for superettes, and Pianeta - Conad (now E. Leclerc - Conad) for hypermarkets. Conad also sells fuel under its own brand, sourced from its own refinery not linked to other companies and at prices lower than the normal fuel distribution network: it was the first in Italy to promote this offer in the E.Leclerc-Conad hypermarket in Gallicano, in the province of Lucca. An expansion of this offer is planned. On March 31, 2008, Conad also entered the mobile telephony market as a virtual operator on the Vodafone network, under the Conad INSIM brand. However, the service ceased on November 1, 2009.
