OCB is a network of stakeholders working across disciplines to understand the ocean's role in the global carbon cycle and the response of marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles to environmental change. Current OCB Research Priorities include changing ocean chemistry such as acidification, deoxygenation, and nutrient loading, and their associated impacts on marine ecosystems. Other priorities are ocean carbon uptake and storage, including processes from the air-sea interface to the deep ocean; marine organism-mediated carbon cycling and export via the biological pump; benthic-pelagic coupling and sedimentary feedbacks on marine biogeochemistry and food webs; carbon cycling and associated biogeochemical fluxes and exchanges along the aquatic continuum; and marine organism response to environmental change, including molecular, physiological, ecological, and evolutionary processes. OCB plays multiple important support roles for its network by organizing and co-sponsoring workshops, training activities, and working groups on emerging research issues. It also serves as a central information hub through websites, email lists, newsletters, and social media. OCB leads and/or engages with relevant national and international science planning initiatives and engages and supports the next generation of ocean carbon scientists through travel support, networking, mentoring, and capacity building activities.
