The Obras Sociais Irmã Dulce (OSID) were born on May 26, 1959, with Saint Dulce dos Pobres as its founder. The institution is the result of the path of love and service and the persistence of the religious sister who traveled for more than a decade in search of a place to shelter the poor and sick taken from the streets of Salvador. The roots of OSID date back to 1949, when the Sister, with nowhere to go with 70 patients, asked her superior for permission to house the sick in a chicken coop located next to the Santo Antônio Convent. The episode gave rise to the tradition that the largest hospital in Bahia was born from a simple chicken coop. Currently, the philanthropic entity houses one of the largest complexes entirely dedicated to SUS in the country, with about 3.5 million outpatient procedures per year, in Bahia, for users of the Unified Health System (SUS), the elderly, people with disabilities and with craniofacial deformities, people experiencing homelessness, users of psychoactive substances, and children and adolescents at social risk. The organization has a unique profile of services in the country, distributed across 21 units that provide assistance to the low-income population in the areas of Health, Social Assistance, Scientific Research, Health Education, Education, and in the preservation and dissemination of the history of its founder.
