What does a dental treatment or a visit to the general practitioner cost? And who checks if healthcare providers and health insurers comply with the law? In the Netherlands, there is an organization that sets healthcare rates and supervises healthcare providers and health insurers. That is the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). We set rates for healthcare treatments For most healthcare treatments, health insurers and healthcare providers jointly make agreements about the content of the treatment, its quality, and its price. The NZa sets some prices, for example, the rates for care in an institution for the elderly or people with intellectual disabilities, or for your visit to the general practitioner and the dentist. We are supervisors in healthcare The NZa checks – based on its own analyses and reports from consumers – whether healthcare providers and health insurers comply with laws and regulations. For example, health insurers must accept everyone for basic insurance. Regardless of age, income, lifestyle, or health. And healthcare providers must charge for treatments correctly. They must also provide clear information about the price and quality of care. If the consumer's interest is at stake? Then the NZa intervenes. We advise the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport The NZa advises the minister and the state secretary of Health, Welfare and Sport, both upon request and unsolicited. These advices concern, for example, possible improvements in healthcare laws and regulations. The ministers then decide for themselves whether or not to adopt these advices.
