The Rio de Janeiro Metro has been operating since March 1979. In 1997, with the concession, the administration and operation of the lines and stations were entrusted to the Opportrans Consortium (Metrô Rio), concessionaire for a period of 20 years. At the end of December 2007, the concession was renewed until 2038 and Metrô Rio took responsibility for the construction of Line 1A, which will connect Line 2 to Line 1, eliminating the need for transfers at Estácio, for the purchase of 114 cars and construction of the Uruguai and Cidade Nova Stations. It is the second most extensive network in the country, with 42 km distributed over two lines and 38 stations, second only to the São Paulo Metro. It transports about 550,000 passengers daily.
