Mega International Commercial Bank Co., Ltd. (Mega ICBC) was formed by the merger of The International Commercial Bank of China and Chiao Tung Bank on August 21, 2006. Both banks have long histories of outstanding track records. In 1971, The Bank of China was privatized to become The International Commercial Bank of China Co., Ltd. (ICBC). Its origin dates back to the Ta Ching Bank and its predecessor, the Hupu Bank, which was part of the imperial court's finance arm during the Ching Dynasty. The Bank of China served as an agent of the Treasury and a note-issuing bank before the Central Bank of China was established in 1928. The Bank of China was then designated as a licensed specialized bank for international trade and foreign exchange. Leveraging its specialization in foreign exchange, its worldwide network of outlets and correspondent banks, superb bank assets, and excellent business performance, ICBC became a top-tier bank in the Republic of China.
