Marienlyst Strandhotel

About Marienlyst Strandhotel

Marienlyst Strand & Badehotel is a modern seaside hotel blending historical romance with contemporary style, situated right by the sea. Founded in 1861 and named after Queen Juliane Marie, wife of Frederik V, the hotel quickly gained European recognition. Its distinguished guests included royalty and the Copenhagen upper class who frequented the shores of Øresund during summer. Weekly newspapers would list the glamorous arrivals at Hotel Marienlyst. Notable guests included King Christian IX and his brother Prince Hans, who stayed in room 15 each summer. The Russian Tsar dined with his entourage, and the Prince of Wales enjoyed dinner at the restaurant. Crown Prince Frederik, later King Frederik VIII, granted the hotel privileges to fly a split flag, use a royal crown in its emblem, and operate a casino, making Casino Marienlyst the first casino in Denmark.
