Megève is located in the subalpine furrow, between the Aravis massif and the extreme crystalline massif of Mont-Blanc. The municipality extends into the upper Arly valley and over just over 4,000 hectares, on both banks of the river, between 1027 and 2485 meters above sea level, with an average of 1113 meters. Tourism, which truly took off in the 1920s, has largely dominated the local economy since the mid-20th century. Megève is one of the first-generation winter sports resorts, along with Chamonix and Saint-Gervais les Bains. It has successively been classified as a tourism resort, a climatic resort for holidays, and a winter sports and mountaineering resort. The ski slope network has been progressively connected with those of neighboring municipalities and today constitutes one of the most important ski areas in the Alps. As a member of the « Best of The Alps » network, the municipality of Megève, due to the quality of its accommodation and its preserved identity, attracts an international clientele, including a number of high-profile personalities. The 2009 budget for the municipality of Megève balances at €30,697,431.76 for operations and €21,499,549.51 for investment.
