About Kriminalvården

Kriminalvården's task is to, through probation and prisons, implement the penalties that the court orders, operate detention centers and carry out transports, as well as conduct personal investigations in criminal cases. The tasks shall be carried out so that prosecution can take place effectively and recidivism can be prevented. In all activities, we strongly protect humanity and respect for the individual's integrity and legal certainty, without compromising on the safety and security of society. Within Kriminalvården, approximately 10,800 people work on average per month, and the financial turnover is close to SEK 8 billion every year.
