Kinross operates in the activities of mineral research and development, mining, processing, and commercialization of gold. It is one of the largest gold producers in Brazil, responsible for 22% of national production. With operations at the Morro do Ouro mine in Paracatu, northwest of Minas Gerais, and an office in Belo Horizonte, the company is part of Kinross Gold Corporation, a Canadian group with a presence in South America (Brazil and Chile), North America (United States and Canada), Africa (Ghana and Mauritania), and Eurasia (Russia). In 2006, the company began a major expansion project that increased ore mining capacity to 61 Mtpa and nearly tripled annual gold production in Paracatu, reaching 17 tons per year. The project also extended the mine's useful life by more than 15 years, now estimated until 2030. The unit is an important industrial enterprise in the region. There are over 1,700 direct jobs and more than 3,000 outsourced positions. In addition to being the main generator of taxes and responsible for fostering other businesses, Kinross invests in initiatives that contribute to the territory's development and is certified by national and international standards related to health, safety, environmental management, and social responsibility. Certifications include the International Cyanide Management Code, OSHAS 18001, ISO 14001, and SA 8000. Kinross directs efforts to mineral exploration projects aimed at finding new deposits that ensure the future implementation of gold mining and production ventures. The company has mineral exploration projects in the Southeast region of Brazil.
