Karolinska University Hospital is a hospital operating in Stockholm County, in both Huddinge and Solna. The hospital was formed on January 1, 2004, through a merger of Huddinge University Hospital (HS) and Karolinska Hospital (KS). The former Karolinska Hospital is now part of the merged university hospital's two units, located in Solna just north of Stockholm city center. Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital and the Poison Control Center are also located there. Radiumhemmet is responsible for non-surgical cancer treatment. It was founded in 1910 and used X-rays and radium instead of surgery as had been used previously. In 1937, it was moved from Fjällgatan to the Karolinska site in Solna and became state-owned, having previously been privately run by the Cancer Society in Stockholm. The activities still include radiation therapy, drug-based cancer treatment, preventive care, and palliative oncology. There is also a research laboratory there. The Huddinge unit is located together with various research and study units in Flemingsberg in Huddinge Municipality, south of Stockholm. Karolinska Trial Alliance performs services in clinical trials in Stockholm County. The unit's task is to create a foundation for the development of new medicines and more effective healthcare. Karolinska has branches elsewhere in the Stockholm area, such as the Oncology Units at Danderyd Hospital and Södersjukhuset. Another example is "Karolinska Södermalm" Hearing Rehabilitation at Rosenlund Hospital. A new hospital is to be built to replace the existing Karolinska University Hospital in Solna: Nya Karolinska Solna, also called NKS. The old hospital is considered outdated and has significant renovation needs. The new hospital is planned to be completed at the end of 2015.
