In the 1970s, a small group of women committed to addressing a big problem: gender-based violence in the Greater Jacksonville area. Initially, they established a rape crisis hotline, but soon calls revealed another troubling epidemic: domestic violence. In 1976, in response to the unmet need, the women fundraised in the community purchased a house in the Springfield area of Jacksonville, and Hubbard House, Florida's first domestic violence shelter serving victims and their families, opened its doors. Throughout the '70s and '80s, Hubbard House continued to grow and innovate. A second house was purchased. Children’s programs were added. A thrift store was established as a means of agency support. More focus was put on prevention and intervention. For example, speakers began to present programs to middle and high school students. Today, Hubbard House is a 116-bed state-of-the-art facility located in a safe, secure and confidential location. Vital wrap-around services, like counseling, are provided at the shelter, at the Hubbard House Outreach Center on Beach Boulevard and in the community. Additionally, Victim Advocates are embedded with the Department of Children and Families and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Serving Duval and Baker Counties, Hubbard House, a full-service certified domestic violence center, has answered more than 101,500 hotline calls and sheltered more than 42,900 survivors and their children in its life-saving and life-changing 44-year history. The agency’s impact can be measured in suffering spared, lives liberated and tragic deaths avoided right here in the local community.
