The hochschule 21 is built on a strong foundation. Architects and civil engineers have been trained in Buxtehude since 1875. The current university continues this unbroken tradition, consistently focusing on dual bachelor's degree programs. In addition to construction, it has expanded its teaching offerings to include professions in health and technology, and also offers an interdisciplinary, part-time master's degree program. It is therefore the innovative training center for specialists and managers in the Elbe-Weser region and complements the university landscape of the Hamburg metropolitan region. Due to the close connection between academic teaching and sustainable practical experience, students come to Buxtehude from all over Germany. The hochschule 21 was newly founded as a private university of applied sciences in 2004 after the dissolution of the University of Applied Sciences Nordostniedersachsen and began its academic operations in the winter semester of 2005/2006. The protest at the time against the "higher education optimization concept" by the state government of Lower Saxony led to an initiative for private sponsorship based on the model of a Public-Private Partnership. Since then, the university has been supported by regional corporations, institutions, and associations, as well as the Lower Saxony Association of Cities and Municipalities, and is supported by the state of Lower Saxony. The name of the university derives from its connection to the region: the Elbe-Weser region forms the postal code area "21." Furthermore, it refers to the reorganization of European higher education through the Bologna Process and the creation of a unified European higher education area since 1999. All degrees from hochschule 21 are state-recognized and follow ECTS. The quality of teaching is ensured through state accreditation procedures. In addition, the university offers continuing education seminars, as well as the opportunity to complete related vocational examinations alongside studies.
