About Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ)

The UFZ is one of the world's leading research centers in environmental research and enjoys high social recognition. It shows ways for a sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of people and the environment. Biological diversity, functioning ecosystems, clean water, and intact soils are our natural resources. In the face of global change, the employees of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ are united by the goal of showing ways to reconcile a healthy environment with societal development on the basis of excellent research. As a reliable partner, the UFZ supports politics, business, and civil society in better understanding the consequences of human actions for the environment and in developing options for societal decision-making processes. To this end, the UFZ addresses societal challenges and creates knowledge and technologies that are intended to help identify problems in the conflict between environment and society at an early stage and develop precautionary solutions. Addressing complex environmental problems requires overcoming boundaries between natural, engineering, and social sciences. The UFZ has extensive experience in integrated environmental research, possesses innovative scientific infrastructures, and maintains important national and international collaborations. This allows for the development of practice-oriented solution options on a sound scientific basis. The creativity and motivation of the UFZ employees, their personal and professional development, the promotion of young scientists, and working conditions at the UFZ that are also attractive to top international researchers are essential to fulfill this mission.
