It was December 1, 1852, when the lights in Heilbronn first came on – with gas. Until shortly before midnight that day, a total of 740 gas flames illuminated the centuries-old darkness. The Heilbronn paper manufacturer Gustav Schaeuffelen had long advocated for this technical progress and finally received the order himself for the supply of the required gas. Heilbronn's first gas factory and the first gas holder were located on his factory premises at the present-day Dammschule. In 1881, the city of Heilbronn bought the gasworks with land, buildings, equipment, and the pipe network for 362,232.78 Reichsmarks. The constantly increasing demand for the new energy led to the construction of a new, larger plant shortly after the turn of the century. It was built at the current location on Weipertstraße. The natural gas era for the supply area of Heilbronner Versorgungs GmbH began on June 30, 1973, practically at the same time as the administrative reform. But before that, an equipment conversion to the new type of gas was necessary, as the burning properties of natural gas differed significantly from those of town gas. A total of around 55,000 gas appliances had to be converted to the new natural gas. This precisely planned operation was completed in the record time of just eleven months. In the context of the oil crisis of 1973, Heilbronn thus freed itself from the prevailing oil dependency and made an important contribution to changing energy policy. Meanwhile, HNVG's gas supply network extends from Mosbach to Bönnigheim in the north-south direction and from Weinsberg to Massenbach.
